On the way back to Kaifeng from Xi'an, we decided to stop off in Luoyang, another city in Henan province. We only stayed in Luoyang for one night, but we had enough time to check out a temple “The White Horse Temple” and the famed Luoyang Grottos. The temple, according to William is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in the country. The grottos are an elaborate, seemingly endless cliff of Buddhist carvings and caves. Here are a couple of pictures of each.

On the white horse (before you scorn me for doing this, mother, please note the ladder on the side of the horse specifically placed so people can climb on the horse to take photos!) |
The Grottos (only a very small section) |
The Grottos again. The Buddha behind the Tim's is about 12 meters high. all hand carved |

in each of these little caves/holes is an individual and unique Buddha carving |
Almost the entire span of the carvings from across the river. (the biggest black spot is the one that houses the 12 meter Buddha, just to get a scale of the the magnitude!) |
